Leadership Debating

A leadership debating program was run across Victorian schools this term. While we missed out on competing in the debate we were given the opportunity to watch the final between two schools via our Polycom Video Conferencing equipment.

The Year 5/6 Leadership team was able to watch the debate and interact with the speakers through the Polycom system. The debate was on the topic, “Junk food should be banned from the canteen”.

We have registered our willingness to compete in the Term 3 program so check back in later in the year to see how we go!

National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence

On Friday was the National Day of Action Against Bullying in Violence.

We spent some time in class looking at bullying and how we can stand together to say that we don’t want or tolerate bullying in our school.

Our P-6 students all placed a hand print on a banner and this banner will be on display in the school.

All students deserve to come to a school which is safe, inclusive and friendly. To stop bullying we all need to work together to treat others with respect and kindness, and stand up for what is right in our school.

National Young Leaders Day

On Friday 13th March, the year 6 captains and vice captains (Madison, Isis and Josh went down to Melbourne for the National Young Leaders Day (Halogen Conference). We heard some guest speakers talk about leadership.

We heard Mike Martin (the leader of Halogen) and then Bindi Irwin talk about conservation and some of the amazing things her father did. After that we had a morning tea break.

In the next session we heard the famous author, Andy Griffiths speak. He spoke about how to come up with interesting story ideas by just using the everyday things around us. During his talk he stuck a baby’s head on a dinosaur body! After that we had a fun game with beach balls. We also listened to Jess Gallagher who is a Paralympic athlete who competes in downhill skiing with hardly any eyesight.

After lunch we had our final speaker named Coen Ashton. He has had a double lung transplant because he suffered from Cystic Fibrosis. He travelled all the way down the Murray River 2 times!

On the way home we stopped at McDonald’s and we got back to school just before 6pm.

“I enjoyed playing the games and listening to the speakers talk about their life. I did not like waking up at 4:30 in the morning!” by IsisHalogen 01

Library Time with Preps

Every Friday the Year 6 students go over to the Library to help the Preps with their borrowing. They also allow their buddy to choose a picture book which they then read to them.

Here are some photos of the students working together.

6L Stories

We decided to mix things up a bit in writing this week.

Each student wrote the first sentence of a story in their Writing Books and then they had to pass their book to the person next to them. Each student then read their neighbour’s sentence and then wrote their own to continue the story. After their sentence was added the book was again passed on to the next person.

This process continued for about 20 passes until everyone had a complete story in their Writing Books.

The main criteria was to make sure the story flowed and maintained cohesion.

I think the students did a good job (even though unicorns, Gollum and a guy called, ‘Jeff’ featured very highly)
