Reflections of Junior School

Students in 6L had completed a book which captured highlights of their time in Junior School.

With nearly less than a week left in Junior School, the students in 6L took their books that they had written and illustrated down to one of the Kindergarten classes.  Pairing up with a Kindergarten student they read their book and answered any questions that the Kindergarten students had about school and what to expect as they move through the Junior School years.

It was great to watch the way the Year 6 students got alongside the Kindergarten students and care for them.

When they had finished the Kindergarten students were able to choose a story that their Year 6 buddy read to them.

Here are some shots of the students working together:

An Interview from Antarctica

We have really enjoyed learning about Antarctica this term in 6L.  We have completed Glogs on different animals, gone undercover as workers in Antarctica, created Prezis on the Antarctic Treaty, and much more!

The students had a lot of questions.  I tried to see if we could set up a Skype connection with an expeditioner down in Antarctica but that proved to be difficult, so I sent an email to the Australian Antarctic Division and a lady by the name of Rosie was able to offer us great help.

She suggested that we put a list of questions together and email them to her and she would pass them on to someone working down in Antarctica.

So 6L got to work.  We set up a TitanPad and collaboratively researched different aspects of Antarctica and compiled a list of questions that we wanted to ask.  Click HERE to read the questions. (The list was actually MUCH longer but I had to cut it down as best I could).

The most amazing news came back from Rosie only a couple of days later.  She said that some expeditioners down in Antarctica were going to put a video together for our class and answer our questions!!!

And here it is…

6L would love to thank Rosie for all her help in connecting us with an expeditioner down in Antarctica and we really appreciate the time and effort that Mark Williams (Station Leader at Mawson) put in to filming his answers and sending us a video.  The class was in stunned silence after we watched it as I don’t think they could believe that someone from Antarctica had directly contacted them.

Designing and Making Boats

As part our Science Unit (Sinking, Sailing, Soaring) students had to design and construct a boat using recyclable materials.

Once complete, they raced against each other in a trailer filled with water.

They raced in two classes – Wind Powered and Motor Powered.

Here is an Animoto slideshow on the students making their boats and the finished products:

Year 10 Service Week

This week we have had Year 10 students serving us in Junior School.  They have listened to students read, cleaned storerooms and organised games.

Here are some shots of the students in 6L playing a game with the Year 10 students.

Home Safety

We have been looking in class at how to make sure our homes are safe from hazards.

Students have worked in Collaborative Clusters to create a ‘Home Safety Checklist‘ which they took home and completed for Homework.

They also had to design and create a poster to promote safety in the home.  Here are the top 5 posters…

Antarctica Interviews

The students in 6L have been working through a Webquest on Antarctica.  You can check it out HERE.

Their task this week was to go ‘undercover’ in Antarctica.  Here is an excerpt from the Webquest:

Now that you are an expert on an Antarctic animal you need to become familiar with living and working in Antarctica.

Your Mission Handler (teacher) will provide you with a cover so that you can move freely around Antarctica without drawing attention to yourself.

Once you are given a character, you must BECOME that character. Print off the information on that character from HERE and read through everything. Highlight the important parts to remember and cross out the parts that you want to leave out so that you are comfortable with the information on your character.

You will be interviewed by the Antarctic Division and this will be recorded on film. You need to be convincing!

The students have been interviewed and you can have a look at how they went HERE.

Were you convinced?

Visit from French Students

On Monday 7th of November, students from a French school came to our school to do some activities with the year 6 classes. When it was our turn, we had to split into our CC’s and wait for Mr. Lindsay to put the French people in our groups.

First of all Mr. Lindsay introduced himself our class to the French teachers and students. Secondly Mr. Lindsay gave us two pieces of paper with the title ‘French Trivia’ and ‘Australian Trivia’. Mr. Lindsay put trivia questions up on the board. E.g. what is another name for Australia? At the end we had to tick the questions if they’re were right and cross them if they’re wrong. It was out of 40.

After a hard day of work we invited the French students to come and eat recess with us. We had a talk about our school and how different they are and we were very surprised on how well they spoke English, but I guess most of them were born in Australia.

We had a really fun half an hour with the French. We learned so much and I am sure that they learned a lot from us as well. I hope that they come back again and we would learn more about them and their school.

Interview with a Senior School Student

As part of our transition program to prepare Year 6 for moving into Senior School, students in 6L had the task of interviewing a Senior School Student.

During the Senior School lunchtime, 6L found an older student to interview.  Here are the questions they asked…

1. What was the biggest change you noticed in going from Primary School to High School?

2. What was the best thing about starting High School?

3. What were the biggest things you had to learn about straight away (e.g. getting organised)?

4. Did you have an orientation day before you started High School?  How helpful was this?

5. What has been the most challenging thing about High School?

6. How much homework is the average student expected to do in High School?

7. What are you best tips for helping me prepare for High School?

8. What is your best advice for me in starting High School?

Prezi with Year 4

On Friday afternoon students in 6L were asked to assist Year 4 with Prezi.

If you are not familiar with Prezi you can check it out here.

We trekked up to H Block and each of the students paired up with a Year 4 student.  They helped them set up a login and then talked to them about ‘Digital Footprints’.  We had learned in class that it is important to think about what information is displayed using online resources and to be careful that we don’t reveal too much personal information.

6L then went to work teaching the Year 4 students how to use Prezi to create a presentation called, ‘About Me’.

The students were fantastic and the Prezis looked outstanding!

Here are some photos of the students working together.
