Making Packages

To finish off our Unit on Package it Better, students worked in Collaborative Clusters to design a package which would protect an egg from an impact.

The students were given the following design brief:

Make a package that was…

  1. Able to protect a fragile gift
  2. Low in cost to produce
  3. Environmentally friendly
  4. Aesthetically pleasing

Here are some photos of the students working on their packages and videos of the final tests:

Vietnam Dioramas

The students brought in the dioramas which they had been working on for homework over the last couple of weeks.  They had done a great job.

They each presented their diorama to the class with a speech on the topic they had chosen and some information about how they made their diorama.

Watch the video of the dioramas and leave some comments to let the kids know what you think.

Packaging Selfies

As part of a homework task, students visited their local shops to observe the way in which packaging has been incorporated into shop displays.  This is quite a new development in packaging technology.

Previously, products would be unpacked from their packaging and arranged onto shelves for people to browse and buy.  Nowadays packages have been designed to be incorporated into the way the product is displayed on the shelves.  Some just have a perforated section which gets removed to allow the product to be taken by the customer.  This development in packaging designed has helped reduce waste as well as making the job of packing shelves much easier.

When students found an interesting package design they took a ‘selfie’ with the package using their phone or iPod.

Here is our ‘Packaging Selfie Wall’:

Vietnamese Biscuits

As part of their Vietnamese News Report, Tom brought in some Vietnamese Cookies which his mum had made.  Apparently he didn’t think they tasted very good so they had a selection of Vietnamese jellies to help destroy the aftertaste.

Tom did make it very clear that you had to consume a biscuit before you were allowed to have a jelly.

I actually thought the biscuits tasted great!

Thanks, Tom’s mum – for going to that effort to help the students experience something from Vietnam!
