Investigating Worms

Today Mr Cohen came in to class with a clew of worms (a clew is the collective noun for a group of worms…)

The students observed their worms and noted some of their characteristics and habits.

They then conducted a few simple experiments to see how the worms responded in different situations.

Half-covering their worm with a paper (tent) revealed that the worms tended to want to stay in the dark.

Placing a ice-pack at one end of a metal tray and placing their worm in the middle indicated that worms didn’t like the cold and wanted to move to the warmer side.

Thanks, Mr Cohen for coming in and helping us discover more about worms!

Book Week

The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) have been promoting Book Week since 1945.

This year the theme was ‘Connect to Reading’.

We had a great time connecting with reading in 3/4L this week. As well as our normal Literacy activities we read an interactive story each day from StorylineOnline. This site contains a collection of stories which are read aloud by famous actors. It has been put together by the Screen Actors Guild Foundation.

On Friday we had our Book Parade. Here are some students from 3/4L in their costumes…

Trip to Beechworth

On Friday 15th August Year 3-5 went to Beechworth. First we went from one bus to another bus which took us gold panning. After that we went for a hike near Woolshed Falls. During the hike we saw a waterfall.

Next we went to the bakery. At the bakery we got to choose a pie or a sausage roll. Then we got to choose a strawberry/chocolate milk or an orange juice. We then went to the lolly and spent our $5.

Then we went to the Burke Museum and were able to wander around and explore the items through history. After that we went to the Court House where Daniel showed us some things which were very interesting. Then we did a play of Ned Kelly getting sentenced to death.

We then caught the bus back to school and got there just as the bell went to go home. We had a great day.

Potato Olympics

Last week students from grades 3-5 participated in our very first Potato Olympics.

Each student created a potato athlete and were then assigned one of the Commonwealth countries to represent.

On Friday they competed in the following events:

  • Weight-lifiting – which potato is the heaviest?
  • Bowling – which potato can knock over the most number of pins?
  • Luge – which potato makes it through the luge course the quickest?
  • Height – which potato is the tallest?
  • Diving – which potato makes the biggest splash?
  • Sprinting – which potato is the fastest at rolling down a ramp?

The students will use all the data gathered on the day to create graphs, calculate averages, and lots of other exciting Maths stuff!

Here is a video which captures the day…
